One of the most frequently requested car repairs from our referral partners deals with brakes. Earlier in October 2025, St. Vincent de Paul of NKY referred a young lady to the Samaritan Car Care Clinic who desperately needed brake work. She apparently spent just about all of her money buying a used car, but did not have any more money to deal with severely worn brakes on that car. With no savings and no ability to put repairs on a credit card, she just kept driving.
The photo may not do complete justice to the situation, but all four brake rotors on her car were severely worn and grooved because the brake pads were basically gone. Mechanics refer to this as metal on metal. Basically a hockey puck sliding along ice. The photo shows one of the rotors and the brake pads off of her car (bottom), next to a new rotor and new pads (top). Quite the contrast!
She was having to use her hand lever parking brake to try to come to a stop because her “regular” brakes had stopped working weeks ago.
So a reminder that if you ever hear a squeal from your brakes, or it takes extra-long to come to a stop, get your brakes inspected very soon. Don’t keep driving until they fail, as is what happened with this young lady.
Your financial support helped make this lady’s car safe for her, her family, and for you and me who share the same roads. Thank you for your help!
