Can I Donate a Car With No Title in Kentucky?

A Missing Title Is Not a Dead End
One of the most common reasons people delay donating a car — sometimes for months or years — is a lost or missing title. The car sits in the driveway. The good intention sits on a mental to-do list. And the family who needs that car goes without.
Here’s the truth: a lost title is a paperwork problem, not a dealbreaker. It can be resolved. SCCC has helped donors work through it more times than we can count.

The Kentucky Title Requirement
Kentucky law requires a title to transfer vehicle ownership. However, that doesn’t mean you need to have the title in your hand on day one. What it means is that before the donation is completed, the title transfer must be executed.
Here are your options:

Option 1: Apply for a Duplicate Title
If your title has been lost, stolen, or destroyed, you can apply for a duplicate at your local county clerk’s office. You’ll need to complete Form TC96-182 (Application for Title/Registration), which must be signed by all registered owners and notarized. There is a small fee for the duplicate.
This is typically the cleanest path — it results in a fully valid title you can then sign over to SCCC.

Option 2: Call SCCC First
In some situations, SCCC can work with you to initiate the donation process and help navigate the title question — especially if the title situation is complicated (inherited vehicle, deceased owner, lien on the title). Call us at 859-525-6240 and describe your situation. We’ve seen most of them.

What to Do When You Have the Title
When your title is in hand, Kentucky requires that you sign the title in the presence of a notary. We have a notary on staff who will guide you through the title signing process for your donation.
Remove your license plates before pickup. In Kentucky, you surrender plates to your county clerk or transfer them to another vehicle.

What About the Insurance?
Only cancel your vehicle insurance after you have completed the title transfer notification with your county clerk’s office. Canceling early creates a window of liability exposure you don’t need.

Don’t Let the Title Stop You
Call SCCC at 859-525-6240. We’ll walk you through your specific situation — title or no title. Rather give cash? No title needed for that — samaritancarcare.org accepts both.
